My name is Delphine Schwarze. I’m a proud Yamatji Nhunda Ngarlu (woman) from Mullewa, now living on Noongar Boodja. My family connections follow the Murchison River, from Kalbarri through to Northampton, and that Country will always be a big part of who I am.

I grew up spending a lot of time out on Country. We went out bush, found waterholes and learnt to live from what was around us. Kangaroo, bardi grubs, emu, quandongs, sweet potato and bimba were all part of growing up. They’re memories I’ve carried with me throughout my life, and a lot of those memories now come through in my paintings.

I’ve always been a creative person, but I found painting later in life and taught myself as I went. It quickly became something I loved. When I’m painting, I’m in my own little world. It gives me a sense of peace and keeps me connected to my culture, my family and Country.

Every painting I create has a story behind it. Sometimes it comes from my own experiences and memories, and other times I’m trusted to tell someone else’s story through my art. I love bringing all the different parts together, the people, Country, animals, waterways and connections, almost like sitting down and having a yarn.
